Royal Mail chairman Donald Brydon re-appointed
Friday 23 March 2012
The chairman of the Royal Mail has been re-appointed for three years on an unchanged annual salary of £200,000, it was announced today.
Donald Brydon was appointed chairman of the postal group in 2009.
Postal affairs minister Norman Lamb said: "Donald Brydon has proven over the last three years that he has the qualities and attributes needed to lead the Royal Mail board through what has been a challenging period.
"I'm delighted to announce his re-appointment. His skills and experience will be needed as the company moves into the next phase of its development."
Mr Brydon said: "The first three years have been remarkable. The Board has been rebuilt, we have outstanding new management, the Postal Services Act has been passed by Parliament, the solution to Royal Mail's pension problem has been settled relieving the company of a significant cash drain, the regulatory framework is going through redefinition and the modernisation programme in the company is progressing apace.
"I am confident that under the leadership of the new management team Royal Mail will succeed. Of course, much will still depend on the new regulatory framework for Royal Mail which Ofcom is expected to unveil shortly. Royal Mail very much needs to be allowed the freedom to compete fairly in a market open to full and growing competition, and where we can focus fully on customers and the market while being subject to competition law like any other company.
"A key challenge remains to secure the future of the cherished one-price-goes-anywhere universal service to the UK's 29 million addresses."
