Supermarket Sainsbury said today that sales rose 6.8 per cent in the 11 weeks to 21 March.
On a comparable basis — which excludes newly opened stores — the company reported a gain of 6.2 per cent.
Including fuel, sales rose 3.4 per cent in total and 2.7 per cent on a comparable basis.
The company said its sharpest gain was a 60 per cent jump in sales of its cheapest food line, branded as "basics."
Results were adjusted to account for Easter falling during the same period in 2007.
