ScottishPower said this weekend that green energy had come of age, as it began generating electricity from the first wind farm in the UK to operate without a subsidy.

The 13 megawatt wind farm, at Hare Hill, in Ayrshire, cost £10m and will supply electricity to 10,000 homes.

ScottishPower has connected the first four of the 20 towers to the electricity grid, and expects the wind farm to reach full output next month.

It is the company's 10th wind farm, taking its investment in wind power to more than £100m. Over the next 10 years, ScottishPower plans to increase its wind power capacity from 100 to 500 megawatts.

Government schemes require electricity retailers to supply 10 per cent of electricity from renewable sources by 2010.
