Some 11 per cent of Shell investors yesterday either abstained or voted "yes" to a resolution calling for greater openness on the environmental, social and financial risks of the oil company's controversial tar sands investments. The motion was introduced at the AGM in the Hague, backed by 142 shareholders.

And although it was resoundingly rejected by the majority of investors, supporters said it had succeeded in stimulating shareholder engagement.
