Mike Ashley's Sports Direct is set to buy 60 stores from struggling rival JJB Sports out of administration today but thousands of staff will lose their jobs at the Wigan-based chain.

Sports Direct, the sportswear market leader, is set to take 20 JJB stores immediately, and the other 40 are subject to approval from the Office of Fair Trading. The expected deal could see up to 1,500 jobs saved at JJB, but as many as 2,500 are likely to be made redundant.
