SSE in a price rise pledge

The energy giant SSE yesterday pledged not to increase the price of household electricity or gas before October but could make no commitment beyond that.

The company said profits from its domestic supply operation fell 21 per cent over the past year as it tackled higher costs and falling usage, though it still made £271.7m in the year to 31 March.

SSE, the UK's second-biggest supplier with 9.5 million household and business accounts, said this amounted to an average of £30 per household.
