Sweden's City Airline cancels all flights and files for bankruptcy

A Swedish airline that served the UK has cancelled all flights and filed for bankruptcy.

City Airline, a subsidiary of Skyways Express, operated services between Gothenburg and Manchester as well as flying to a number of Swedish and other destinations.

On its website today Skyways Express said passengers with flights in the near future should contact their travel agency "to investigate the possibilities of compensation or re-booking of flights".

The company went on: "For passengers who have booked flights directly via our website we regret to inform that it is currently not possible to re-book or receive compensation via Skyways.

"Passengers who have booked via our website and paid using credit card are recommended to investigate compensation via the credit card company."

This summer, City Airline was operating 11 flights a week between Manchester and Gothenburg, with the route being particularly popular with business executives.

There were two services a day on weekdays plus one flight on Sundays.

Some passengers arrived at Manchester for the scheduled 9am departure to Sweden today only to learn that all flights had been cancelled.
