Trinity Mirror, publishers of The Mirror and the UK's largest local newspaper publisher, is to add 84 weekly local titles to its stable with the acquisition of Southnews.

It has reached agreement over a £12-a-share offer, representing a 57-per-cent premium over yesterday's closing price for Southnews of 762.5p.

The chief executive of Trinity Mirror, Philip Graf, said Southnews has a "tremendous portfolio" of high-quality titles focused on Greater London, around the M25 and in Essex and Kent.

Trinity's regional titles include the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, the Liverpool Echo, the South London Press and the Reading Chronicle.
