Car production accelerated in January, with 110,179 cars produced in the UK, a 8.9 per cent rise on the total in 2010, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Commercial vehicle production also rose 8.9 per cent last month compared with the year before, to 9,967, with engine manufacturing increasing 12 per cent.

The SMMT's chief executive Paul Everitt called on the Government to use the Budget to introduce more tax breaks for manufacturers. "Automotive is leading the manufacturing revival, but to ensure this positive trend continues, the Government must prioritise UK manufacturing, through a supportive tax system, plus sustained investment in skills, research and development (R&D) and capital equipment," he said.
