The UK's trade gap with the rest of the world narrowed sharply from £4.3bn to £2.7bn in September, bolstering hopes for a boost to the economy from an improved trade performance.

A 2.5 per cent rise in export volumes in the month outstripped a 1 per cent fall in exports, although separate figures showed construction output fell 2.8 per cent during the month.
