Whyte & Mackay toasts soaring profits

The Scotch whisky maker Whyte & Mackay's profits jumped by more than a third last year. The company is owned by India's United Distillers, which rival drinks giant Diageo is bidding to take control of.

Whyte & Mackay, which also owns the Jura and Dalmore brands, made a profit of £15.3m on sales which increased by more than 35 per cent to £229.8m for the year to the end of March 2012.
