The bookmaker William Hill has hailed "excellent" trading after its retail arm performed well in the face of consumer uncertainty.

The group said the economic climate could impact revenues if consumer spending drops, but its first-quarter figures showed a resilient performance so far with earnings up 21 per cent.

Since the first quarter, Hill said it enjoyed a good Grand National after the favourite failed to win. While it was not its best Cheltenham, Hill revealed it banked £2m in profits from two races in one hour.
