US calls for early warning system

MADELEINE ALBRIGHT, the US Secretary of State, yesterday called for an early warning system to avert future trade disputes between the European Union and the United States. Speaking after a meeting with EU representatives to prepare an EU-US summit on 21 June, Ms Albright said the two regions should work to locate trade problems "at an early stage". Leon Brittan, the EU Trade Commissioner, said the idea of such a scheme would be to catch a problem early and then "try and nip it in the bud".
