RESIDENTS OF the remote British South Atlantic island of St Helena, whose supply ship has been immobilised, should not go short this Christmas, the Government said.

Baroness Amos, for ministers, said at question time: "Action has been taken to ensure supplies that would have been delivered by the RMS St Helena will reach the island before Christmas.

"Cargo on RMS St Helena at the time of its breakdown will depart from Brest tomorrow and arrive at St Helena on December 14. Parallel arrangements have been made for the delivery of cargo from Cape Town to arrive at St Helena on December 3."

The vessel leaving Brest will provide an interim service between St Helena, Cape Town and Ascension Island.
