CORRECTION:Rupert Allason MP
In Monday's edition we published an article "MPs use car mileage to clock up expenses" in which it was stated incorrectly that the car mileage allowance paid by the House of Commons to MPs is free of tax. We implied that there was a financial advantage to MPs to make the journey to their constituencies by car instead of using the free rail warrants available, but we now acknowledge that this is not the case. In fact Members of Parliament are taxed on all car mileage claims.
We regret the error and have given an unreserved apology to Rupert Allason MP whose photograph appeared in the article.
