Cricket / Texaco Trophy: Lord's win gives clean sweep to Australia

AUSTRALIA completed a Texaco Trophy whitewash of England yesterday as they won the third match at Lord's by 19 runs.

England looked set to end their six- match losing sequence in one-day internationals after an opening stand of 96 between Graham Gooch and Alec Stewart, but although Stewart went on to make 74, they collapsed from 159 for 3 to 211 all out. Australia had recovered from a slow start to reach 230 for 5 from their 55 overs thanks to 73 from David Boon, 57 from their stand-in captain, Mark Taylor, and an unbeaten 51 from Damien Martyn.

Ayrton Senna won the Monaco Grand Prix for the fifth consecutive year, and a record sixth time, passing the mark set 24 years ago by Graham Hill, the British driver.

Hill's son, Damon, finished second for the third time this year in a Williams, after his team-mate Alain Prost broke too quickly at the start and incurred a 10-second stop-and-go penalty. Jean Alesi gave Ferrari third place, ahead of the beleaguered Prost.

Nuclear Electric won the British Steel Challenge by 70 minutes and 25 seconds after 151 days of round-the- world racing. Although Group 4 Securitas won the final leg from Cape Town to Southampton, just pipping Commercial Union and British Steel II into the Solent in the early morning, Nuclear Electric held enough of an overall lead to secure victory when she finished soon after noon.
