A woman who stabbed her partner to death when she thought he was going to attack her escaped a prison sentence yesterday.

Mary Mullins, 37, endured four years of beatings until she snapped when bodybuilder Ronnie Griffiths, 50, played music at full volume as she tried to get their baby to sleep. Fearing another assault, she stabbed him in the chest. A Cardiff Crown Court judge took pity on her after hearing how just a few hours before the killing she had begged police to take her to a refuge to escape from the violence of her common-law husband, known in the area as "Ronnie Muscles". Ms Mullins was given a two-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
