An anonymous Kipling enthusiast was one of the principal sponsors behind Sussex University's winning bid of pounds 9,250 for the Kipling papers at the Chichester auction yesterday.

A woman's generous donation was the major factor enabling university librarian, Adrian Peasgood, to secure the package of Kipling's most significant documents for the nation at a price which almost doubled the estimate by Stride and Son, the firm of auctioneers which has been running sales in theCathedral city since 1896.
