A British woman was sentenced to six years in jail after being found guilty by a Russian court of smuggling cocaine worth pounds 1m.

Eighteen-year-old Karen Henderson's was arrested in February during a stopover at Moscow airport after travelling from Cuba. Her claim that she had bought her suitcase at Havana airport without knowing it contained drugs was dismissed.

In a statement before judgment was reached, Henderson said: "I believe in justice. I really hope that Your Honour has taken all the facts into account. I told you the truth. I hope you also believe in justice." She is expected to appeal.
