The University of Edinburgh could become the most expensive in the UK after announcing increased fees for students from England, Wales and Ireland.

The university will charge £9,000 a year in tuition fees for students from the rest of the UK, making the total cost of a degree £36,000 for a four-year course – the standard length in Scotland.

Last month, the University of Aberdeen also set the rate at £9,000 a year, but with a fourth year free.

Edinburgh university said it would offer "the most generous bursary package within the UK for those on the lowest household incomes". The University and College Union said the changes mean "only the wealthiest will consider Edinburgh an option".
