My inner-city school colleagues are universally fuming over your "Personally Speaking" article. I have had no "financial incentive" for more than 20 years, but I feel I have done my job properly.

There are many hard-working and conscientious teachers working enthusiastically and creatively, often with large and difficult classes in the dilapidated physical surroundings of their under-funded inner-city schools. It is true that often their examination results do not compare well with those in the independent sector. But who is to say they are bad teachers? It is not divisive performance-related pay for some teachers that is needed, but a decent professional salary for all.
