Sailin: Krantz on sleigh ride

The race leader Gunnar Krantz powered through heavy snow in 55mph winds as Swedish Match covered 424 miles in 24 hours on the second leg of the Whitbread Round the World Race from Cape Town to Fremantle.

Krantz paid a price for his speed. The starboard steering wheel was damaged and so much water was rushing over the deck that a distress beacon was set off accidentally.

Wave damage was also suffered by second-placed Knut Frostad in Norway's Innovation Kvaerner. The webbing straps attaching spare sails to the weather rail were broken and some stanchions ripped out, allowing freezing water to pour through the holes in the deck.
