The University of Washington has offered a fellowship to the blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng, who has said that he wants to study in the United States following his dramatic escape from house arrest.
Mr Chen is waiting for approval to travel to the United States under a deal struck between Washington and Beijing. The 40-year-old activist took refuge in the US embassy for six days after fleeing house arrest in Shandong. He is being treated in hospital for a broken foot and other ailments.
New York University had also issued an invitation to Mr Chen. "We're giving him another option," a UW spokesman told The Seattle Times.
