If my friend locks me in a room, and says I am free to come out whenever I like so long as I pay £5, is this a deprivation of liberty?

yes. it's the same as saying 'everyone's equal but some are more equal than others.'
it presents the captive with the idea that they are of course free, but at a small price while blinding them to the fact that their need to pay is actually a load of bollocks.
either that, or its the beginning of a successful enterpeneur.
who would you sooner accept to oxbridge?
the freind, or the kid sat in his room counting out coins?
