A sixth-minute goal from Alan Shearer and a last-minute strike from Teddy Sheringham gave England victory in their World Cup Group Two qualifying match in Chorzow last night, their first victory in Poland for 31 years.

Despite heavy pressure from the Polish side and a missed penalty on the stroke of half-time by Shearer, the England captain, the visitors held on to all-but ensure themselves a place in next year's finals.
