The mother of a baby found by a newspaper delivery boy on Boxing Day has been traced.

The child, who has been named Molly by hospital staff caring for her, was abandoned in a hedge in Gateshead with her umbilical cord still intact.

A spokesman for Northumbria police said: "We have established the identity of the mother of the baby. However, she has yet to be interviewed in order to establish the exact circumstances which led to the baby being abandoned."
