The deputy prime minister, Michael Heseltine, was woken at 5am yesterday at his country home, Thenford House, in Northamptonshire, when 60 protesters opposing the use of open caste mining in Britain occupied the garden. The group, who included Anne Scargill, wife of the NUM leader Arthur Scargill, left after six hours.
