IN BRIEF: Aristide anniversary

Port-au-Prince - For the first time, President Jean-Bertrand Aristide celebrated the anniversary of his 1991 inauguration in his own country. The only military uniforms in sight were those of United States soldiers providing security.

"Democracy for us Haitians is gold," Mr Aristide said.

"Today, we are fighting for gold." The president was ousted in a military coup in September 1991 and spent three years in exile in the US
