The Queen yesterday unveiled a memorial at St Paul's Cathedral in London to the 47 British servicemen killed in the Gulf war. The congregation included the Prime Minister, senior government and opposition politicians, members of the royal family, Baroness Thatcher and Sir Edward Heath.

Representatives of the Allied Forces in the war against Saddam Hussein, following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991, also took part. A large area around St Paul's was cordoned off with police marksmen on nearby rooftops. After two IRA bombings in London this month a Ministry of Defence official described the extensive security operation as "commensurate with recent events".
