An Army bomb disposal squad was called in yesterday after incendiary devices were discovered on a railway line running alongside a poultry farm. The fire-bombs, contained in five holdalls, were found on the Settle-Carlisle line at Langwathby, six miles from Penrith in Cumbria.

Cumbria Police said the devices, none of which had detonated, were being examined but initial findings suggested that Irish terrorism could be ruled out. Officers are investigating links between animal rights' activists and the planting of the devices. Detective Inspector Peter Brown said: "We are working on the principle that it may involve an animal liberation group."
