Nelson Mandela came under attack on two fronts. As the main black opposition leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi accused the South African president of "arrogance and aggression" against Zulus, Mandela's white deputy, F W de Klerk, launched a bitter attack on him for not taking firm action against Winnie Mandela, currently under investigation for fraud and corruption.

Mr De Klerk said Mr Mandela's African National Congress "seems to be slow" in dealing with the president's estranged wife and deputy arts and culture minister, whom he described as the "queen" of troublemakers within the ruling party.
