It seems like an inspired bit of joined-up PR thinking – an invitation from Daft Punk to “Get Lucky” but not also pregnant, or infected with something nasty. The French duo responsible for the horribly catchy single of the summer had apparently jumped into bed with Durex to create condoms with packaging inspired by the cover of their album, Random Access Memories.
NME reported that Durex had sent samples of the prophylactics to DJs, hoping word would spread before an official launch. Diplo, an American DJ, posted a photo of an opened cardboard wrapper with the TMI caption: “Thank god I had those Daft Punk condoms last night.”
The shot went viral, as it were, but when Trending contacted the PR company working for Durex, which is owned by Slough-based Reckitt Benckiser, it denied having any part in the stunt. A statement read: “There is no Durex promotion or partnership with Daft Punk in the UK or any other markets and Durex are not posting free packs to the world’s top DJs.”
Sony Music, Daft Punk’s record company, did not respond in time to enquiries but it seems unlikely artists known for being shy would slap their names on condoms. So whodunnit? For now it remains a mystery but rest assured The Independent is on the case.Reuse content
