Comeback kid Chris Evans was named Music Radio Personality of the Year at the industry's equivalent of the Oscars.

The Radio 2 star triumphed at the Sony Radio Academy Awards, beating Jamie Theakston of Heart 106.2, Lauren Laverne of Xfm, Marc Riley of BBC 6 Music and Virgin's Tim Lovejoy.

Evans, sacked from Virgin Radio in 2001 after embarking on a very public drinking binge, returned to the airwaves last year with a Saturday afternoon show on Radio 2 and recently took over Johnnie Walker's drivetime slot.

His win will dismay the listeners who bombarded the station with angry emails after he was named as Walker's successor.

More than 1,000 listeners voiced their complaints - prompting Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas to issue a statement insisting Evans be given a chance.

Evans was also nominated for the Entertainment Award.

But he was beaten to the prize by Radio 1 breakfast show host Chris Moyles.

Radio 2 veteran Terry Wogan was honoured with the Gold Award for outstanding achievement.

The Irishman is the nation's most popular DJ, with eight million listeners regularly tuning in to his breakfast show Wake Up With Wogan.

Radio 1 had a good night - it was named UK Station of the Year and DJ Zane Lowe bagged two awards, for Specialist Music Programme and Music Broadcaster of the Year.

Radio 4 took seven awards, including Speech Broadcaster of the Year for Eddie Mair and News Journalist of the Year for Angus Stickler.

The station's six o'clock news bulletin won the News and Current Affairs Programme award.

Nick Ferrari of London station LBC won the Breakfast Show Award while the Speech Programme Award went to Stephen Nolan of BBC Radio Ulster.

Station Programmer of the Year was Richard Park of Magic 105.4.

Local station Kerrang! 105.2 West Midlands scooped four awards including Station of the Year with a potential audience of over one million.

The awards took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London's Park Lane.

The nominees were selected from more than 1,400 entries across UK radio.
