Current Google Insights trends: Fort Hood, Melbourne Cup

The Fort Hood shooting is the most searched for topic on the morning of November 9.

Searches related to the Fort Hood shooting that left 12 dead and 31 injured experienced significant growth after the first accounts of the event came in on Thursday.

Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire November 5 at Fort Hood, Texas in an act that shocked many Americans and has raised questions of Islamic extremism in the US military and concerns of backlash against the Muslim community.

Maj. Hasan, shot by police during the shooting, has been reported to be in critical, but stable condition.

The Melbourne Cup continues to be a popular search despite having taken place nearly a week earlier on November 3.

The term 2012, related to the soon-to-be-released disaster movie 2012 and the 2012 Olympic Games, occupies the third place spot on the list.

The movie 2012, in theaters November 13, follows the story of survivors of the end of the world. The Olympic Games will also be held the same year in London.
