Current Twitter trends: Follow Friday, 'Balloon boy', Anne Frank
Friday 16 October 2009
Follow Friday is the most talked about topic on twitter on the morning of October 16.
During this weekly Follow Friday-ritual, people on Twitter write posts that include the alias of people on Twitter they believe are worth following.
A chorus of Twitter users started Tweeting, "#BalloonBoy where are you?" on October 15 after a 6-year-old boy reportedly climbed into his family's experimental "helium balloon" before it was launched into the air.
Authorities frantically searched for Falcon Heene with Twitter users echoing the young boy's parents' cries for help with their posts on Twitter. After a lengthy search, Falcon Heene was finally found, not scared or traumatised from his ride in the balloon, but hiding in a cardboard box in the family attic.
A CNN video interview with the family after the event suggested that the stunt may have been a hoax carried out by the family for publicity (the Heene family have previously been featured on a reality TV show called Wife Swap). When asked why he didn't come down from the attic when he heard his parents calling Falcon Heene looked at his parents and replied, "Um...you guys said we did this for the show."
People on Twitter are now talking about the boy's parents with disdain, saying, "This whole #balloonboy thing is awful. Just watched the videos and think it's undeniably a publicity stunt. Who would do that to their kids?"
Other's are tweeting, "Yo #balloonboy, I'm a let you finish, but Anne Frank had the best attic hideout spot of all time."
