Mainstream broadcasters who doubted the potential success of pay television in the UK will have to face up to the newest ratings from Barb, which give satellite and cable channels an 11.4 per cent share of total viewing, higher than Channel 4 and in line with BBC2.

Tellingly, pay TV takes 40 per cent of all viewing in cable and satellite homes. It looks like Rupert Murdoch, the man who controls Sky, has won his billion-pound pay TV bet.
