The Independent continues to register significant circulation growth, with yesterday's release of the audited sales figures for July showing the 10th consecutive month of increases for the paper.
In July, the average daily sale of The Independent grew to 262,086. This represents the highest sale of the paper since October 1997, and is a rise of 20.5 per cent on the same period last year. Since the launch of the compact version last September, The Independent has consistently out-performed the quality paper market. The July figures show The Times up 2.7 per cent on the previous year, but The Daily Telegraph (down 1.8 per cent) and The Guardian (down 3.8 per cent) both suffered year-on-year falls.
The Independent's share of the quality newspaper market has grown to 12 per cent, which is its highest mark for eight years. Meanwhile, interim figures published yesterday by the National Readership Survey show The Independent making further progress. For the six-month period up to June 2004, total Monday-Friday readership of The Independent increased to 722,000, a rise of 24.3 per cent on the same period the previous year. All other quality titles showed a decrease, with The Guardian down 25.9 per cent. Terry Grote, Managing Director of Independent News and Media (UK), said yesterday: "The innovation we have brought to the newspaper market with our compact format, and the consistent quality of our product, has been recognised by readers and advertisers alike. We are tremendously heartened that circulation continues to grow, and we would like to thank all our readers, new and old, for their support."
