The Independent and Independent on Sunday are under new ownership following completion of the purchase by Independent Print Limited, a company owned by the Lebedev family.

Evgeny Lebedev, above, chairman of Independent Print Ltd, said: "I hope that this will mark a great new era for these remarkable newspapers, which have such a distinguished record of great journalism. It is my intention to help The Independent to prosper under new management and most importantly for it to continue to pursue journalism of distinction and impartiality.

"Simon Kelner is appointed Editor of The Independent, and has also been appointed a director of Independent Print Limited. He remains Editor-in-chief of the Independent titles.

"I am delighted to appoint such a talented editor and great newspaperman who is committed to bringing his unique style and energy to edit The Independent."

Simon Kelner was appointed editor of The Independent in 1998 and oversaw the successful transition to the compact format in 2003. He has been managing director for the past two years and has been interim editor since the departure of Roger Alton in April.

Andrew Mullins, managing director of the London Evening Standard, has been appointed managing director of the Independent titles also, and to the board of Independent Print Limited.

Andreas Whittam Smith, the founder of The Independent, has also joined the board of Independent Print Limited.
