Press barons have done well this week. One celebrated release from jail; another bought the right to inflict yet more reality TV shows on the British public. While disgraced former Daily Telegraph owner and peer Conrad Black enjoyed a taste of freedom after being released from prison on bail in the USA, tabloid and now TV baron Richard Desmond, near left, expanded his media empire by snapping up terrestrial TV channel Five for £103.5m. France's football team suspended for World Cup bust-up
So va-va-voomless in the land of vuvuzelas, France's football squad was punished for strikes and sulks at the World Cup in South Africa with a mass guillotine. New manager Laurent Blanc, near right, says all 23 players, who were knocked out in the group stage, should be suspended. Oui, oui, Gallic shrug, the ban will apply to a friendly against Norway but is still a blow for a team often seen as a touch big-headed. Richard Osley
