Sales of The Independent on Sunday rose by 18.9 per cent in April, taking circulation to 168,151, according to the latest audited circulation figures for national newspapers. The month-on-month increase is the highest in the market.

The IoS shows year-on-year growth of 1.9 per cent, the only quality or mid-market newspaper – daily or Sunday – to post any annual gain. That rise compares with falls of 7.1 per cent at The Sunday Times, 21.3 per cent at The Observer and 10.8 per cent at The Sunday Telegraph.

Sales of our sister paper, The Independent, also showed a strong increase, of 5.2 per cent over the month, taking the daily circulation to 188,119. Its increase was the highest in its market.

Today, The IoS embarks on some design changes to freshen up the paper. There is a new front-page masthead and the index boxes on pages 2 and 103 have also been updated. Over the next few weeks, we will roll out further similar alterations, but, rest assured, all features remain exactly where they are now.

John Mullin, the editor of The Independent on Sunday, said: "We are extremely grateful to all our readers, long-standing and new, for their support. We will try our hardest to retain it."
