Dear Reader

The Independent on Sunday is 1,000 editions old today. Not quite a birthday, perhaps, but certainly a milestone worthy of marking. As you will gather from our coverage, the IoS, or Sindy, has had a rather - how to put it? - tumultuous life since it made its bow on 28 January 1990: having eight editors in two decades, some might say, tells its own story. We plead guilty to a restless approach: with it comes fresh thinking and renewed energy, personal visions and bold campaigns that - call us biased - have made the IoS a distinctive voice in one of the hardest newspaper markets anywhere in the world, propelled by constant debate, and, occasionally, the odd screaming row among its tight band of journalists. Without the budgets of our rivals, our team has thrived on its intelligence, wits and bloody cheek. We hope you will enjoy what amounts to the IoS's greatest hits...

In some special celebratory reports, The Independent on Sunday's eight editors choose the stories that fired them up during their time in charge. Click on the links below to see each editor's selections.

- Stephen Glover, 1990-1991

- Ian Jack, 1991-1995

- Peter Wilby, 1995-1996

- Rosie Boycott, 1996-1998

- Kim Fletcher, 1998-1999

- Janet Street-Porter, 1999-2001

- Tristan Davies, 2001-2007

- John Mullin, 2008-present
