'The Independent on Sunday' goes compact

Independent News and Media today announced that The Independent on Sunday is to become Britain's first quality compact Sunday newspaper from Sunday 16 October.

Backed by a television and radio campaign, The Independent on Sunday will comprise a 104-page main news section including comment, news review and sport.

The paper will also include a new 24-page pull-out travel section, plus a separate business section, and two magazines, the ABC arts review and the award-winning Sunday Review.

Ivan Fallon, chief executive of IN&M said "This is another first for the Independent papers, building on the compact revolution we started two years ago in the daily market.

"In many ways, our latest move is a natural development for the company. We had always intended to turn the Sunday into a compact newspaper, and conditions are now favourable to do so. This move will further enhance our company's reputation for innovation, and we look forward to solid circulation gains."

Tristan Davies, editor of The Independent on Sunday, said: "This is the moment that everybody on the Sunday paper has been waiting for. We are delighted to be first into the Sunday market with a new-format newspaper and look forward to replicating the success of the ground-breaking daily Independent.'
