A large range of seasonal celebrations taking place during the month of October resulted in higher rates of consumers visiting online gift and electronic card sites in the US.

Increased rates of internet users headed to online e-card, flower, gift and greeting sites during October reported market researcher comScore in its November 19 report on the top online properties.

"October is consistently a high-activity month for gift and retail sites as Halloween and other seasonal celebrations drive traffic to these destinations," said Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix. "October also represents the early shopping period for those who want to get a head start on shopping for their friends and family."

Google retained its No. 1 position on the list of Top 50 US web properties with 164 million visitors, followed by Yahoo! Sites (158 million visitors) and Microsoft Sites (133 million visitors). Amazon and Wikimedia Foundation Sites both saw month-on-month growth, rising to the eight and ninth positions respectively.
