Jeremy Paxman will present Channel 4’s election night coverage alongside the comedy actor David Mitchell after declaring that the results programme should have room for both “insight and laughter”.

Paxman and Mitchell will host an Alternative Election Night on May 7, running from 9pm to 6am the next morning, by which time the shape of the new government may just be becoming apparent.

The pair will be joined by Cathy Newman and Gary Gibbon from Channel 4 News but also comedians including Romesh Ranganathan and Roisin Conaty, as well as Richard Osman, the Pointless presenter, for an “all-night feast of comedy and comment.”

The show will also include special election-themed episodes of Gogglebox and The Last Leg.

Jeremy Paxman said: “Elections matter. But that doesn’t mean the coverage has to be dull. I hope there’ll be room for both insight and laughter.”

David Mitchell added: “Our aim is to keep people watching much later than they intended and we will be judged by the dip in the nation's productivity on Friday 8th May.”

The Channel 4 News reporting team will bring the results from the key electoral battlegrounds, with Gibbons and Newman providing “hard-edged commentary on the political story.” Osman will provide his own interpretation of events.

Paxman will be up against his former BBC colleague David Dimbleby, who will front the BBC’s election night coverage from 10pm to 7am. Huw Edwards will then take breakfast viewers through to 10am on May 8.

Tom Bradby will present ITV’s election show, with support from the News at Ten anchor Julie Etchingham, before handing over to Alastair Stewart the next morning.

Adam Boulton will anchor Sky News’ programme with Political Editor Faisal Islam and polling expert Michael Thrasher interpreting the results.
