Twitter reported that it had reached a rate of 50 million tweets per day on February 22 - a far cry from their 5,000 tweets a day in 2007.
The rate equates to around 600 tweets per seconds and that is after Twitter has edited out all the tweets coming from accounts identified as spam.
The microblogging service says the actual rate of tweets it delivers each day is much higher as Twitter must also deliver them to the multiple followers around the world.
According to online news service MediaPost, Twitter is currently trialling systems that will enable the company to monetize their service. MediaPost reports that Anamitra Banerji, head of product management and monetization at Twitter, told them: "we are working on an ad platform, but it's only in the test phase."
Banerji revealed that the ads will initially based around hashtags. He told MediaPost that Twitter will make it "relevant and useful, so the user doesn't think of it as an ad." MediaPost believes Twitter's advertising platform will be slowly integrated into the social networking site in about a month.
