An Irish mountaineer died yesterday after falling from Mont Blanc - the so called "cursed mountain". The accident occurred in the late morning at about 13,000ft, as the Irishman and a French climber were descending the 15,600ft mountain after reaching its summit. The men, who were roped together, fell around 1,200ft.

The Frenchman was badly injured and was airlifted from the mountain to hospital in Geneva. Police declined to reveal the climbers' identities, as not all next of kin had been informed.

Yesterday's tragedy was the latest in a string of fatalities. Last week saw 16 deaths in four days, and Britons Mark Haseler, Clare Kempster and John Green all died on the mountain in July.
