Scientists have provided more evidence that childhood leukaemia may be a rare response to infection, and that this could explain apparent "clusters" of the disease which have been reported since the 1970s.

Reporting in the British Medical Journal, a team from Oxford University said they had found "significant" trends in the incidence of certain types of leukaemia with the proportion of children new to a district.
