A van driver accused of stalking a woman for four years was yesterday cleared of the charges against him.

Dennis Chambers, 37, of no fixed address, had been accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Margaret Bent, 30, a restaurant manager. But the judge directed the jury to find him not guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, saying it was "extremely difficult" to prove intent in matters of psychiatric or psychological harm. The jury also cleared Mr Chambers of a charge of grievous bodily harm and one of affray, when he was alleged to have tried to kick down the door of her office in Brixton, south London. After the case, Ms Bent spoke of her "disappointment and anger". She said: "He's following me around constantly and he seems to take a lot of joy in doing it ... Women should be allowed to walk the streets without fear of such behaviour."
