REM, the four-member rock group celebrated for its social consciousness and artistic integrity, has signed the biggest recording contract in the history of the music industry.

The band will receive a reported $80m (pounds 53m) from Warner Bros for their next five albums, breaking the $70 record set by Janet Jackson. Already in their thirties, the musicians will be nearing 50 when the last album is delivered.
