Lord Archer, one of John Major's most loyal supporters,

last night criticised the timing of Maurice Saatchi's elevation to the House of Lords. He told Sky News: "I must confess that the timing has been bloody awful."

While Mr Saatchi, and public relations guru Peter Gummer, would have been given an informal indication that they were in line for life peerages about three months ago the point made by Lord Archer is that the timing of the announcement was under the direct control of the Prime Minister and is seen as his response to the all-party criticism of the latest "New Danger, New Labour" advertisement, showing Tony Blair ith the fiery eyes of a demon.
